Speaking Cherokee

“I learned from Cherokee storyteller
that the simplest story or phrase
can become the aurora borealis
with just one Cherokee word.”

Chief Charles “Jathohi” Rogers

Your language speaks of where you came from and helps you see where you are going. Learning to speak the words will help you in ways you cannot imagine. The words will speak to your heart and give meaning and purpose to your life. They will become the bridge over which the old ones will pass the knowledge and understanding of what has been learned and the mistakes that have been made and it will make you strong and tolerant.

The words will change your life and how you see other people, places and things. There is prejudice and jealousy today and we need to understand. There will always be people who will say and do things to hurt you for one reason or another. That is just the way life is. And that is why you need to know and sense the pride and strength of being Indian and what it means to you as an Indian. Speak with the old ones - the ones who know the words - learn the language.

In your veins flows the blood of a proud and courageous people who have a rich heritage and culture. This is your country. It always will be. This is where you and many Indians before you were born. And like the roots of a mighty tree, you have spread out and grown deep into the earth. It is from here, the heart of Mother Earth, that you draw your strength and fortitude to live and one day raise your children. Being Indian is what makes you unique, but with it comes a responsibility to be the best you can be. It doesn’t matter what you do for a living, do it with pride for yourself and your family - and your people.

Everything changes - the land, the people, the clothes you wear - but you are still Indian. So let others see your proudness - whether you are white with Cherokee, black with Cherokee, or brown with Cherokee. Cross acculturation has diluted many outward appearances of being Indian, but that doesn‘t mean you are less Indian. If there is Indian blood in your veins - celebrate that fact by claiming your Indian heritage. Do good work and take the money from work well done as we once took the animals of the forest and fish from the streams; to feed our selves and our children. Walk with your head up and be proud but not arrogant. Set an example for the young ones - teach them how to be Indian by your actions.
